Improve your Résumé by turning Bullet Points into Stories

"Write the Résumé in bullet points and keep it short", everyone is familiar with this advice. But don't you think, the bulleted résumé is boring and doesn't portray a true personality and just mention all the accomplishments and qualifications. You sent an amazing résumé but still not selected for the job? There's a huge stack of such boring and monotonous résumés piling up on every HR's desk and they are bored of reading everyone's bullet points.

There is always some scope for improvements. One can improve their dull résumé by turning bullet points into narrative stories. Such résumés are called Narrative résumés and they are far more engaging and descriptive. Bulleted résumé allows you to include just one two points for an accomplishment but for narrative résumé, they carry a conversational tone and you can describe your experience in a paragraph.
In a research, it is found that narrative résumés are more memorable than those who weren't the storytellers. In short, stories in résumés leave more impression. Here are the guidelines you can follow to craft stories in your résumé.

1) Use heading to describe yourself: Write a heading about yourself in the beginning of your résumé just after your name and contact details similar to the "About You" section on LinkedIn. This heading will give the reader a clear view about your vision and your core qualities.
2) Convert your accomplishments into stories: People usually mentioned " Worked at XYZ company as ABC role". But do you think that is enough to explain your role? Storify your accomplishments and qualifications by writing a paragraph of what you've actually learned from that experience. This way of describing your role will assist to outshine other candidates and express more about yourself. Storify it in a conversational tone keeping in mind how you'd explain that particular experience in a conversation.
3) List your stories in reverse order: Usually the HRs give a quick look to Résumé. So rather than explaining situation>challenge>solution try writing in the order solution>challenge>situation. So if the reader is in a hurry they can directly read what you've accomplished in the particular task.
4) Keep résumé stories concise: Do not exaggerate or overwrite in your résumé. Try explaining the story in 4-5 lines. Including numbers would be a great idea, so if your accomplishment can be quantified, mention that. Do not add a pool of words and adjectives, be concise and clear with your words.
5) Ensure your résumé is accomplishment driven: You should not just mention any experience where you accomplished nothing. What a reader is finding from résumé is how skilled you are and how well you can go through a challenge. If any activity cannot be expressed as accomplishment, it is not worth mentioning.

For instance,
- You can use a headline like ".Start up enthusiast", "An average student exploring opportunities", "Experienced Coordinator with demonstrated skills of leadership", etc.
- "Marketing Specialist at ABC Ltd." can be written as Marketing Specialist at ABC Ltd. and delivered marketing campaigns that contributed to 4X customer acquisition and >90% customer retention.
- "Graphics Designer at XYZ company" could be mentioned as "Created engaging and minimal graphics for social media handles that gained 5 times more engagement"

This way you can express a lot more with your words and acquire the attention of HRs and the readers. A narrative résumé is an eye catcher. When few of the HRs prefer the bulleted résumés, a lot of HRs seem to be amazed by stories. The reason behind this is the conversational tone of it. The reader perceives the candidate as more deserving as he is ready to make extra efforts to get the job. Also, narration adds more credibility and authenticity to the résumé by presenting the experience and your ability to solve a problem and demonstrated skills. As a job-seeker you can help the HR person by crafting a narration that seeks the attention of the reader.
Help your résumé to make it look more attractive by crafting some stories and adding the sparkle of confidence and efforts. Your résumé will definitely outshine others CV this way for sure. Obviously, this won't ensure you'll land the job, however it ought to get you more interviews — and more chances to recount, fitting them to what every HR looks for.

With narrative résumé you can easily represent the values and skills you have learnt over time and how you can utilize to handle a crisis. Herminia Ibarra and Kent Lineback in Harvard Business Review, mentioned that they are more impressed by storied résumés because "it entails drafting your story."
